The classic Willow pattern has been in use for over 200 years and was inspired by the patterns on porcelain china that England imported from the country of China during the late 18th century. The story behind the image is an ancient Chinese legend of two young people who fall in love, but the girl’s father does not approve of her suitor and makes it nearly impossible to be together. The lovers escape together and are happy for years until the girl’s father finally finds them, and dispatches soldiers to murder the couple. The two doves symbolize the young pair, finally free to be together. The last line of the legend reads; “Thus they both perished, and the gods, touched by their love, immortalized them as two doves, eternally flying together in the sky”.
